چکیده

Introduction There are major differences in the anatomy and physiology of the ophthalmic system of various animal species when compared to man. These differences reflect the differences in living conditions, behavioral characteristics, environmental diversity and diets of the various animals. The pig has both similarities and differences from humans and this manuscript will describe the anatomy and physiology of the porcine eye; as well as identifying some of the most common models using the ophthalmic system of swine. 1-3

First insight into the proteome landscape of the porcine short posterior ciliary arteries: Key signalling pathways maintaining physiologic functions

Short posterior ciliary arteries (sPCA) provide the major blood supply to the optic nerve head. Emerging evidence has linked structural and functional anomalies of sPCA to the pathogenesis of several ocular disorders that cause varying degrees of visual loss, particularly anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy and glaucoma. Although the functional relevance of this vascular bed is well-recognized,...

Preloaded and non-preloaded intraocular lens delivery system and characteristics: human and porcine eyes trial.

AIM To compare characteristics of preloaded and non-preloaded intraocular lens (IOL) delivery systems during IOL delivery procedures. METHODS Total 101 human eyes were included in this prospective observational case series. Delivery characteristics of 5 types of IOLs including iSert250 NC60 (NC60), EnVista MX60 (MX60), AcrySof IQ SN60WF (SN60WF), TECNIS ZCB00 (ZCB00), and TECNIS PCB00 (PCB00)...

Safety of cornea and iris in ocular surgery with 355-nm lasers.

A recent study showed that 355-nm nanosecond lasers cut cornea with similar precision to infrared femtosecond lasers. However, use of ultraviolet wavelength requires precise assessment of ocular safety to determine the range of possible ophthalmic applications. In this study, the 355-nm nanosecond laser was evaluated for corneal and iris damage in rabbit, porcine, and human donor eyes as determ...

Relation between injected volume and optical parameters in refilled isolated porcine lenses.

PURPOSE This study was performed to elucidate the correlation between added lens refill material and enhanced lens power as well as the correlation between lens refilling volume and accommodative amplitude as determined by equatorial stretching of ex vivo refilled pigs' lenses. METHODS Nine porcine lenses were refilled with increasing amounts of silicone oil. After each refill step, the lens ...

Ascorbic acid as a free radical scavenger in porcine and bovine aqueous humour.

AIM To study the antioxidant activity, UV absorption, concentration and stability of ascorbic acid (AA) in porcine and bovine aqueous humour (AH). METHODS Porcine and bovine AH was taken within 5 min after death and frozen at -70 degrees C. The characteristic UV absorption band of AA and the concentration of AA in AH was determined by UV spectrophotometry. The antioxidant activity of AA to se...
